In-N-Out Burger

In-N-Out is a SoCal staple so it was awesome news to hear from a friend (who was a In-N-Out manager) that they take gluten “allergies” very seriously. You can find delicious burgers, fries and shakes after a long day on the beach

Is In-N-Out Gluten Free?

Life most restaurants, In-N-Out doesn’t have a dedicated gluten free kitchen but they do take gluten allergies very seriously. Fortunately, the main item in their kitchen that includes gluten is just the hamburger bun so you can adjust your order in two ways to help ensure a gluten-free experience:

  1. Order your burger protein style, which means that it will be lettuce-wrapped
  2. Let the In-N-Out staffer know that you have a “gluten allergy” (and I realize that celiac is not the same as gluten allergy but that’s what they call it).  From what we’ve been told, that note on the order is carried down the line through a dedicated “allergy button” in their order system, and your food will be cooked in a dedicated area that is separate from where the buns are located and include manager oversight.

Cross-contamination avoidance isn’t guaranteed but we visited our local spot weekly during my pregnancy and never had an issue.  It was also clear that the staff had specific training on how to handle it and never made me feel awkward or difficult when I requested.

Everything at In-N-Out is awesome, but don’t skip on getting burgers or fries “animal style”, which includes grilled onions.  Delicious!
